Official negotiations took place today, June 25. They will be “challenging but full of opportunity.” President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced this on the social network X.
This is very good news for the people of Ukraine, Moldova and the entire European Union. The road ahead will be challenging but full of opportunity. We wish you a successful start to the negotiations! – she wrote.
As is known, Ukraine submitted its application for EU membership on February 28, 2022 after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.
And on June 23 of the same year, the European Council granted Ukraine candidate status for accession to the EU. This was a historic step, as Ukraine became the first country to receive candidate status during the war. Ukraine needs to fulfill a number of conditions before it can become a full member of the European Union.
Let us recall that on June 21, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky approved the composition of the Ukrainian delegation to begin negotiations on accession to the European Union. The delegation included, in particular, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishina and the head of the Presidential Office Andrey Yermak.
