NY Man and Woman Face $ 500 Fines After Taking Raccoon Into Storage

ATTICA, NY (AP) – A man and woman in New York face a $ 500 fine after taking a raccoon to a pet store to buy food and they were criticized by a store employee, authorities said.

A State Department of Environment police officer received an immediate call from the Nation County Department of Health about a potentially irritated raccoon on June 2, according to a district committee statement.

The Department of Health said the couple took the raccoon to a pet store for food and supplies, and a store employee contacted authorities. Raccoons are considered dangerous wildlife because they are known to carry and transmit the deadly rabies virus.

According to the department, a district election official used store surveillance video, an award card provided by the store, and plaque information to locate the couple in Attica, western New York. The owners handed over the raccoon and charged each with illegal possession of the wild animal, which will be subject to a $ 500 fine, authorities said.

The raccoon taken from the pair is the euthanasia and rabies test, a test that can only be done on an animal after it has died. According to the District Election Commission, the review was negative.
