The SBU press center reported this today, June 24.
Among those affected by the actions of the attackers are relatives of fallen Ukrainian soldiers. In particular, the fact of extortion of 5 million UAH from the family of a Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman who fell at the front was documented.
Having learned that the military man’s wife and his 20-year-old son received financial assistance from the state, the gang members immediately contacted them to collect their “interest,” the SBU notes. “To intimidate the victims, the attackers harassed the young man and threatened to make him disabled, and they put psychological pressure on the mother due to phone calls.
It is noted that in addition to money, the racketeers demanded that the victims groundlessly recognize one of them as the illegitimate son of the deceased defender.
So they wanted to create their own scheme for evading mobilization, so that later, taking the “knocked out” money, they would go abroad, the SBU said.
Two members of the criminal group were caught red-handed when part of the “tribute” was handed over to them.
According to the investigation, local criminals who specialized in demanding non-existent debts from residents of the regional center were detained, the SBU noted.
Currently, the detainees have been reported on suspicion under Part 4 of Art. 189 of the Criminal Code (extortion causing property damage on an especially large scale, committed under martial law). They are in custody and face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
An investigation is ongoing to establish the facts of the gang’s possible involvement in the commission of other particularly serious crimes, the SBU added.
