Last week, Greece reported record high temperatures, strong winds and drought in the country – ideal conditions for fires, writes Bild.
Despite warnings from authorities not to light a fire, crew members of the 55-metre yacht Persefoni lit fireworks on board to entertain passengers on Saturday evening. According to Greek media, there were 17 tourists from Kazakhstan on board.
Sparks from fireworks set fire to the only pine forest on the island of Hydra.
It is reported that the perpetrators of the fire tried to put out the flames themselves, but then called the fire service and fled. Because the area is difficult to access, rescuers were able to extinguish the fire on the island only by sea and air.
All 13 arrested are Greek citizens and crew members.
