A copy of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, one of 500 first editions, has been sold for a bargain.
A rare first edition of Harry Potter has sold for more than £45,000 (about €53,000) at the Lyon and Turnbull auction in Edinburgh. Euronews reported this.
This book is one of the first 500 copies of the novel about the boy wizard, published in 1997. Then the publishers released a small edition because they were not sure of the success.
The sold copy of the first Harry Potter book contains some strange errors. For example, on the cover the word “Philosopher’s” is misspelled, and on page 53 the list says “1 stick” twice.
“The first edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is an extremely rare book to find in any condition, and a copy in such wonderful condition could be considered the jewel in the crown of any Harry Potter collector,” said Katie Marsden , Head. of Books and Manuscripts.
The book was put up for auction by an American collector who bought it two decades ago at a London shop. In addition to the first book, he also donated a first edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets from 1998 (it sold for £7,560 ($9,500).
Other valuable items include a copy of Casino Royale, the first novel in the James Bond spy series, written by author Ian Fleming, and a first edition of AA Milne’s first book of Winnie the Pooh poems , When We Were Very Little, 1924.
A pottery goat made by King Charles when he was a student was previously reported to have sold for £8,500.
One of the world’s oldest books will be auctioned in London
