The Council of the European Union on Friday, June 21, approved the negotiating framework for Ukraine and Moldova. Brussels officially begins preparations for intergovernmental conferences with these states on June 25, which will kick off accession negotiations for these countries. This was reported by the Interfax-Ukraine agency with reference to the high-ranking Belgian diplomat presiding over the EU.
It is noted that the decision was made within the framework of the EU Economic Council meeting, which is taking place in Luxembourg.
As is known, Ukraine submitted its application for EU membership on February 28, 2022 after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.
And on June 23 of the same year, the European Council granted Ukraine candidate status for accession to the EU. This was a historic step, as Ukraine became the first country to receive candidate status during the war. Ukraine needs to fulfill a number of conditions before it can become a full member of the European Union.
Let us recall that on June 11, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU should begin before the end of June. She emphasized that the reforms that Ukraine is carrying out are the basis for making Ukraine “an attractive platform for investment and business,” as well as bringing it closer to the EU.
