The full-scale invasion of Ukraine has fundamentally changed the relationship between Finland and Russia, according to the corresponding report.
A new report from Finland on foreign policy and security suggests that official Helsinki will not continue political relations with Moscow while the Russian Federation is waging a war of conquest against Ukraine. Finnish media Yle reported this in connection with Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen on Thursday, June 20.
Political relations between countries have now ceased, only diplomatic relations and the necessary cooperation between authorities, including at the border, are in force.
The full-scale invasion fundamentally changed the relationship between Finland and Russia, the report said.
At the same time, the report states that Finland will also try, as far as possible, to maintain the conditions necessary for the normal functioning of Russian civil society.
“We hope that Russia will eventually become a democracy,” Valtonen said.
However, the report does not identify Russia as a direct military threat to Finland, although it notes that the threat of military force against Finland must be prepared.
Helsinki believes that Russia will continue to conduct hybrid attacks against Finland. One example cited is the redirection of Russian asylum seekers at the eastern border.
The report also called for preparations for the possibility of damage to critical infrastructure.
As we already wrote, a Russian military aircraft temporarily violated Finnish airspace on Monday, June 10. This is the first incident since the country joined NATO.
