The Prosecutor General’s Office is conducting an internal investigation against Deputy Chief Prosecutor Dmitry Verbitsky. Prosecutor General Andrei Kostin announced this on Wednesday, June 19, in a telethon.
Earlier, journalists of the Scheme discovered a property and a Porsche from Verbitsky’s girlfriend, from which he did not earn anything, and the official himself lives in a house worth half a million dollars, which he bought for six which is times cheaper.
Kostin mentioned that he takes investigative journalism seriously.
He added that the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NACP) is conducting an investigation into Verbitsky’s lifestyle. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) also started its investigation.
NABU opened criminal proceedings under Article 368-5 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (illegal enrichment).
Kostin was summoned to the Verkhovna Rada on June 19 about the possible illegal enrichment of Verbitsky. He did not come, giving a letter to Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk. The text of the appeal was published by People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak. There, the Prosecutor General explained that it was inappropriate to discuss the situation in the Rada until the outcome of the investigation.
“In my letter to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, I drew attention to these circumstances, suggesting to postpone the discussion of this situation until the results of the internal investigation are received only after making any decisions,” Kostin said .
At the same time, he noted that the law does not provide for the decision of the Prosecutor General to remove the deputy from his duties at the stage of the official investigation.
“I spoke with Mr. Verbitsky who outlined to me his arguments and explanations of the situation. in the situation around his representative.
Earlier, journalists from the Schemes program published an investigation stating that Verbitsky lived in a townhouse in the cottage town of Konik in Kyiv, which his nephew bought for an Odessa businessman for six times more cheaper than the market value.
Later, the investigators spoke about Verbitsky’s girlfriend, Kristina Ilnitskaya, who in 2024 became the owner of a new Porsche and a 3-story cottage in the same cottage town. The total cost of the acquisition is at least 52 million hryvnias, although its total income reported to the state over the past decade is just over 360,000 hryvnias.
Then, in a comment on Schemes, Verbitsky said that he did not help Ilnitskaya financially, but did not deny that he was in a relationship with her, however, noted that they were not of a family nature.
