Prosecutor General Andrei Kostin stated this on air at a national telethon.
According to Kostin, he takes investigative journalism very seriously.
I signed an order to conduct an official investigation into these facts, which is ongoing. The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption is conducting an audit of his lifestyle. In addition, I know that NABU initiated its investigation,” Kostin emphasized.
In my letter to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, I drew attention to these circumstances, proposing to postpone discussion of this situation until the results of the official investigation are received. Only then will it be possible to make some decisions,” he added.
Kostin noted that the law “On the Prosecutor’s Office” does not provide for the possibility (by decision of the Prosecutor General) to remove a deputy from his duties at the stage of an official investigation.
I spoke with Mr. Verbitsky. He gave me his arguments and explanations about the situation. He is conducting a number of high-profile proceedings, the defendants of which are very interested in his removal or dismissal,” Kostin noted.
In May, journalists from the Schemes project said that Verbitsky lives in a house in the elite cottage town of Konik in Kyiv, which his nephew bought by proxy from an Odessa businessman for more than UAH 2 million – six times less than its market value.
In another investigation, which was published in June, Schemes journalists found that Verbitsky’s girlfriend Kristina Ilnitskaya became the owner of luxury property worth at least UAH 52 million in 2024, without having sufficient official income of her own for this.
On June 18, the Verkhovna Rada summoned Kostin to parliament for an explanation about Verbitsky’s property status, but he has not yet come to the Rada.
