The US military will have the right to use 17 Swedish military bases and training grounds.
Sweden’s parliament has approved a defense cooperation agreement with the United States, which should strengthen deterrence against Russia. This was reported by Euractiv on Wednesday, June 19.
The document gives the US military the right to use 17 Swedish military bases and training grounds – in addition to Sweden’s new NATO obligations.
The United States has concluded similar agreements, in particular, with Finland, Norway, Denmark, the Baltic countries and Poland.
Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson said there was “a common interest that an agreement be concluded as soon as possible.” He expects Sweden to implement the agreement within a month and send a corresponding note to the United States.
“We said that the memorandum could be signed around August, and then the work could move forward,” said the head of the Swedish Ministry of Defense.
We remind you that on March 7, Sweden officially became the 32nd member of NATO. The country applied for membership in the Alliance in 2022 after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
On May 31, Ukraine and Sweden signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of security. In the period 2024-2026, Sweden will provide military aid to Ukraine worth 6.5 billion euros.
