The Chinese coast guard seized Philippine boats. Beijing said its actions were legal and that Chinese authorities had taken “control measures.”
The Chinese coast guard illegally seized, destroyed and looted Philippine boats in a skirmish in the South China Sea, Bloomberg reported, citing statements by Philippine military officials.
Chinese coast guard personnel illegally seized Philippine rubber boats during the Manila resupply mission for its military outpost in Second Thomas Shoal, according to Alfonso Torres, chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Command. In addition, the Chinese military stole the guns found on Philippine boats and deliberately destroyed the boats.
This prompted Manila to seek compensation from Beijing, Philippine military officials said.
“We demand that the Chinese return our rifles and our equipment and pay for the damage they caused. It is pirates because they boarded our boats illegally and stole our equipment,” said Philippine Forces Commander-in-Chief Romeo Brauner.
And Beijing says its actions are legal and that Chinese authorities have taken “control measures.”
The incident is one of the most serious between the two countries in the disputed waters.
In the spring, it was reported that the coast guard ships of the People’s Republic of China and the Philippines were in conflict.
