The F-16 fighters that the United States will provide for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are located on the territory of Ukraine. National Security Advisor to American President Joe Biden Jake Sullivan said this in an interview with PBS published the previous day.
According to him, the security agreement between the United States and Ukraine provides that the given F-16 aircraft will be located in our state.
“It is planned to deliver the F-16 to Ukraine Moreover, this is confirmed by the bilateral security agreement signed by the President (Biden – ed.) and President Zelensky and states that we want to help Ukraine to have exactly this. This potential should be one based in Ukraine,” said Sullivan.
He noted that in the event of a threat, Ukraine could use the provided air defense systems, including those transferred by the United States, to destroy Russian aircraft.
Sullivan clarified that this means even aircraft that are in Russian airspace, and even if they only plan to open fire.
Earlier, the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said that a certain number of F-16s, whose partners will be transferred to Ukraine, will be stored at air bases abroad so as not to become targets for Russian attack.
Meanwhile, Russia said it would consider F-16s supplied to Ukraine based abroad as “legitimate targets” if the aircraft were used for combat missions.
