Military police will ensure law and order and military discipline in the Ministry of Defense, Armed Forces of Ukraine and State Special Transport Service.
The Verkhovna Rada supported in the first reading the bill on the creation of the military police. People’s Deputy Alexey Goncharenko reported this on Telegram on Wednesday, June 19.
According to him, the document was supported by 247 parliamentarians.
It was proposed to create the military police as a military formation with law enforcement duties. It will be part of the security and defense sector. The main task of the military police is to ensure law and order and military discipline in the Ministry of Defense, Armed Forces of Ukraine and State Special Transport Service.
The body’s powers also include recording crimes, searching and detaining military personnel, and protecting the rights of military personnel according to NATO standards.
At the same time, the structure will ensure law and order and military discipline among military personnel, those liable for military service and reservists, as well as the protection of their lives, health, rights and legitimate interests.
The creation of a new body will take place on the basis of the Military Law Enforcement Service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the bill, military police activities should be coordinated by the Cabinet of Ministers through the Minister of Defense. During the legal regime of martial law or a state of emergency, the overall management and coordination of military police activities shall be carried out by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The military police is staffed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine and cannot exceed 1.5% of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Let’s remember that earlier the Ministry of Defense called on the representatives of the people to determine the priority bill No. 6569-, which provides for the creation of a military police.
