In the first phase of prisoner mobilization, more than 4,000 people are expected to voluntarily join the army.

More than 2,750 convicted men have been released from Ukrainian prisons to fight since parliament passed the law in May. This was reported by The Washington Post on Sunday, June 16.

The Minister of Justice, Denis Maluska, in a comment to the publication, said that, according to his forecasts, at least 4,000 convicted men will agree to become volunteers in the first stage of recruitment.

For now, the inmates will serve only in the assault units, which are made up entirely of ex-prisoners.

“The motivation of our prisoners is stronger than ordinary soldiers.

Maluska noted that there was competition among military commanders for volunteers from ex-prisoners.

“There is competition between military commanders for hiring (convicts – ed.) There is a lack of manpower, so they really want to get access to prisons,” said the minister.

A prisoner who wants to fight must be physically fit, undergo a psychological examination and not exceed 57 years of age, which will allow him to serve at least three years before reaching the age of 60, making him he deserves to be released.

Those who kill more than one person, commit acts of sexual violence, or violate national security laws are not eligible to participate in combat.

We remind you that on May 17, President Vladimir Zelensky signed a law on the mobilization of prisoners. The law provides conditional early release from serving the sentence for convicts who decided to sign a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

It has been reported that prisoners mobilized into the army will serve exclusively in special units attached to military units.
