At the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Zurich native John Neidhart joined the International Legion.
Swiss citizen John Neidhart, who fought for two years on the side of Ukraine against the Russians, was arrested in Bern. Blick reported this on Saturday, June 15.
It was reported that the previous day, the 36-year-old Neidhart himself had voluntarily surrendered to the police, surprising local law enforcement officials. He took this step to draw Ukraine’s attention to the Peace Summit, which is now in Switzerland.
According to Neidhart, the summit should not be taken seriously, but Ukraine should be given a chance to win the war.
“If you really want to help Ukraine, you have to give it the ability to defeat the Russians militarily. You have to break the Russians first before you negotiate with them, not the other way around,” he said.
John Neidhart strongly criticizes the Swiss government for its very limited aid to Ukraine.
In Switzerland, by law, he faces up to three years in prison for serving in a foreign army.
With the outbreak of a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, a native of Zurich joins the International Legion. He was a machine gunner and participated in the fighting in the Donbass and Kharkov regions, especially in the counter-offensive and liberation of Ukrainian territories.
According to media reports, about 10 Swiss are fighting on the side of Ukraine, but they did not reveal it so as not to experience problems at home. Only John Neidhart has publicly announced his service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Let’s remember that on June 15, the first Peace Summit began in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock attended by 100 delegations – 92 countries and 8 international organizations.
