Specialists examined hundreds of areas and patients for cholera, but only in controlled areas.
There have been no recorded cases of cholera in Ukraine this year, the Ministry of Health reported on Friday, June 24th.
“Intensified cholera surveillance began on June 1. It occurs every summer, because it is a favorable time for the spread of this disease. In the first two weeks, from 1874 patients with chronic infections in intestines, 545 people were diagnosed for cholera. No cholera vibrios were found in the examination “, – said chief sanitary doctor Igor Kuzin.
Analysis of environmental samples was also conducted. More than 550 samples of fresh water, 47 samples of seawater and 215 samples of wastewater were examined. According to the results of the cholera vibrios study, it was not found.
The Ministry of Health reminded that the source of the causative agent of cholera is a person who himself is a carrier of vibrios. Typically, it is acquired through drinking contaminated water, vegetables, fruits, food prepared by an infected person, bathing in contaminated water, and through household contacts.
Vibrio cholerae can live for a long time: in water and food at room temperature – for 2-5 days, on the surface of fruits and vegetables in the sun – for eight hours, at low temperatures and in sea water – more than two weeks.
We will remind, earlier about the isolated cases of cholera in Mariupol, said the mayor’s adviser Petr Andryushchenko. According to him, more and more people in the city are suffering from gastrointestinal tract problems. And in the absence of normal medical support, it can lead to thousands of deaths.
