The United States will provide support, training, maintenance, intelligence, security, defense industrial, institutional, and other assistance to build Ukrainian security and defense forces.
The United States and Ukraine, on the sidelines of the G7 summit, signed a bilateral agreement on security guarantees for 10 years. The document was signed by the American and Ukrainian presidents, Joe Biden and Vladimir Zelensky. It was reported by Reuters.
The agreement is supposed to be a step towards Ukraine’s possible membership in NATO.
“The parties recognize that this agreement supports a bridge to Ukraine’s membership in the NATO alliance,” the text said.
Additionally, in the event of an armed attack or threat of such an attack on Ukraine, senior US and Ukrainian officials will meet within 24 hours to consult on a response and determine what additional defenses are needed of Ukraine.
The agreement states that the United States plans to provide long-term material support, training and advising, maintenance, intelligence, security, defense industrial, institutional and other support to build Ukrainian security and defense forces with ability to defend a sovereign, independent, democratic Ukraine and deter future aggression. .
As is known, the Ukrainian authorities have been negotiating an agreement with Washington since last year. However, the dialogue was temporarily suspended when the US Congress failed to pass a bill providing aid to Ukraine. After the project was approved, discussions continued.
According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv is working hard to make this agreement as strong as possible. We are talking about armed, financial and political support.
We remind you that Ukraine and Japan have signed a bilateral security agreement. This is Ukraine’s first security agreement with a state in the Pacific region. For Japan, this kind of agreement and level of support is unprecedented.
In total, Ukraine has concluded 16 security agreements: with the UK, Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Iceland and Norway.
