After a series of meetings and debates, US President Joe Biden decided to send Ukraine the second American Patriot anti-aircraft missile system. The move was approved last week. This was reported by The New York Times, citing unnamed White House officials and the military.
Biden’s decision came last week after a series of high-level meetings and internal debates on how to meet Ukraine’s urgent needs for enhanced air defense without compromising U.S. combat readiness, the publication said.
It is noted that this “Petriot” will arrive from Poland, where it protected the rotation of American troops returning to the United States. The SAM could be deployed in Ukraine over the next few days depending on the maintenance or modifications it needs.
The White House expressed hope that the deployment of another American Patriot system will encourage allies to transfer additional air defense systems to Ukraine.
Let us recall that on June 11, during a visit to Germany, President Vladimir Zelensky said that Ukraine expects in the near future positive decisions on the transfer of two or three Patriot air defense systems. Also yesterday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on June 11 that Germany would transfer the third Patriot air defense system to Ukraine over the next months.
