Reuters reports that they will arrive in Havana next week:
“This visit is in keeping with the historical friendly relations between Cuba and Russia and strictly complies with international rules,” the Cuban Foreign Ministry said, adding that none of the ships allegedly carry nuclear weapons, so their stay in their country does not pose a threat to the region.
The announcement came a day after a US official told reporters that Russia plans to send warships to the Caribbean, particularly Cuba and Venezuela, for naval exercises.
The exercise, involving warships and long-range bombers, will be the first simultaneous air and naval maneuvers Russia has conducted in the Caribbean since 2019.
According to the channel’s interlocutor, the training has been planned for a long time, and it is unlikely that they are a response to US President Joe Biden’s recent partial lifting of the ban on Ukraine using weapons provided by Washington against targets in Russia.
Russian ships are expected to enter the seas of Cuba and possibly Venezuela, and the exercises will continue throughout the summer.
The United States does not consider the expected arrival of a small number of aircraft and ships a threat, but the US Navy will monitor the exercise.
