Russia sent warships to Cuba to conduct exercises. They will arrive in Havana next week.
Four Russian warships will arrive in Havana next week. This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Reuters reports.
“This visit is in accordance with the historical friendly relations between Cuba and the Russian Federation and strictly respects international norms. None of the ships carry nuclear weapons, so their stop in our country does not cause threat to the region,” the statement said.
The composition includes:
-
Yasen-class nuclear submarine – carrier of Caliber, Oniks, Zircon cruise missiles;
-
Admiral Gorshkov class frigate – carrier of Caliber, Oniks, Zircon cruise missiles;
-
tanker project 23130 Akademik Pashin;
-
Project R-5757 rescue tug Nikolay Chiker.
Russian ships are expected to arrive in Havana between June 12 and June 17.
Cuba’s statement came a day after a US official told reporters that Russia plans to send warships to the Caribbean, including Cuba and Venezuela, for naval exercises.
The United States does not view the arrival of a small number of Russian ships as a threat, but the US Navy will monitor the exercises, the US official said.
Let’s recall that during the 27 months of attacks on the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the temporarily occupied Crimea, Ukraine sank or seriously damaged more than ten large warships – a full third of the fleet.
