The foreign ministers of the 12 member countries signed a letter to start negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova in June.
Twelve EU member states supported the start of negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on EU membership in June. Euractiv reported this on Wednesday, June 5, with reference to a letter from the signatory countries to Belgium, which currently leads the EU.
“We jointly call for the adoption of a framework for negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova by the General Affairs Council no later than June, to convene intergovernmental conferences in both countries before the end of June 2024 ,” the foreign ministers said in a letter. addressed to the head of the Belgian Foreign Ministry. Hadji Labib.
It was noted that Belgium, which holds the presidency of the EU until the end of June, has insisted in recent weeks to make a decision on this issue. An intergovernmental conference with a candidate country marks the formal start of accession negotiations, a process that usually takes years.
“In light of the results achieved and ongoing reform efforts in both Ukraine and Moldova, as the Commission previously reported, we believe now is the time to move forward,” the ministers wrote.
The letter was signed by the foreign ministers of the Czech Republic, Sweden, Estonia, Finland, Portugal, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Slovenia, Romania and Slovakia.
Let’s recall that President Vladimir Zelensky previously insisted that negotiations begin in June 2024.
