Citizens are urged not to download or open suspicious files, be sure to set up multi-factor authentication and exercise caution, even if the message comes from friends.
Hackers are using the DarkCrystal RAT malware, which is distributed via Signal messenger popular with military personnel. The State Service for Special Communications and Protection warned about this on Tuesday, June 4, in connection with the government group CERT-UA.
It was noted that the attackers, through Signal, were carrying out targeted cyber attacks against government officials, military personnel and representatives of defense enterprises in Ukraine.
To increase the credibility of “infected” messages, a compromised account from someone in your contact list or public group can be used to send them.
First, a message is received containing the archive, the password for it and a note about the need to open the file on the computer. The archive contains an executable file with extensions .pif or .exe, which is another RARSFX archive and contains VBE, BAT and EXE files. Running these files leads to the computer being infected with the DarkCrystal RAT malware and gives attackers the opportunity to secretly gain unauthorized access to the computer.
The CERT-UA government team sees an increase in cyberattacks using instant messengers and the active use of compromised accounts.
In this regard, citizens are urged not to download or open suspicious files, be sure to set up multi-factor authentication and be vigilant, even if the message comes from friends.
If suspicious activity is detected, you should contact CERT-UA. Contacts: [email protected]mobile +38 (044) 281-88-25.
It was previously reported that Russian hackers linked to the GRU attacked Polish government agencies.
NATO has accused Russia of cyberattacks on the Czech Republic and Germany
