According to Beijing, the couple, who worked for government agencies, were recruited by British intelligence.
China has accused Britain of recruiting a couple working for the Chinese government to spy for the MI6 intelligence agency. The Association Press reported it.
The Ministry of State Security, China’s main intelligence service, said it had solved an espionage case against a couple identified only by their surnames – Wang and Zhou. The department says they were recruited by the British foreign intelligence service MI6.
The lawsuit alleges that Wang came to Britain as a student in 2015 and was later joined by his wife. The Chinese national was allegedly provided with hotel rooms, trips around the country and financial incentives.
According to the Chinese Ministry of State Security, the couple worked for the Chinese government in a central government agency and dealt with state secrets, which they passed on to MI6.
It is known that the case of Wang and Zhou is not yet under investigation. No other details were provided.
Meanwhile, in Britain no comment was given on this case.
Let’s remember that the British government ordered the MI5 counterintelligence service to “refocus” its counter-terrorist efforts to combat espionage from Russia, China and Iran.
Earlier, the British Foreign Office summoned Chinese Ambassador Zheng Zeguang after accusing the three men of spying for Hong Kong.
