55-year-old entrepreneur Galla Tomasdottir won the presidential election in Iceland. This was announced on Sunday, June 2, by Icelandic national public broadcaster RUV.

Voter turnout was 80.8%, the highest since 1996, according to the National Election Commission, which released the official and certified results of the presidential election.

Halla Tomasdottir received 33.9% of the votes. He defeated his opponent, former prime minister Katrin Jakobsdottir, who resigned in April to run for president. He received 25% of the votes.

Thomasdottir will replace current President Gvýdni Johanesson, who did not take part in the elections, on August 1.

President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Tomasdottir on his victory in the Icelandic elections: “I appreciate his strong support for Ukraine and I look forward to working together to strengthen the Ukrainian-Icelandic partnership, as well as ensuring a just and lasting peace in Europe and beyond.”

The Icelandic Parliament – the Althing – overwhelmingly approved a resolution on long-term support for Ukraine for 2024-2028.
