Video posted online by the Russian occupiers shows beatings, humiliation, threats, and simulated murders.
Ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN over a video that spread online of the abuse of prisoners of war in Ukraine, possibly in the direction of Kharkov. The ombudsman posted the corresponding video on Sunday, June 2, on Telegram.
“A video has been circulated online in which Russian soldiers are abusing Ukrainian prisoners of war. According to preliminary information, this happened in the direction of Kharkov, where the Russians are trying to carry out offensive actions,” he wrote.
The video recorded beatings, humiliation, threats and a simulated murder. Such actions are a violation of the Geneva Conventions, according to which prisoners of war have the right to humane treatment.
The Ombudsman sent official letters to the ICRC and the UN to document the fact of abuse of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
“Unfortunately, such treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war is not an exception to the rule, but a common tactic for the occupiers,” he stressed.
Earlier, Lubinets said it is known about 216 political prisoners detained by the Russians during the temporary occupation of Crimea since 2014.
