Deputy Levan Khabeishvili said the pogrom was organized by the leading Georgian Dream party, and law enforcement officials, including members of the special forces unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, allegedly participated in it.
About a hundred people wearing black T-shirts and shirts, with masks on their faces and armed with sticks on the night of Saturday, June 1, tried to enter the office of the largest opposition party in Georgia , the Only National Movement, founded in 2001 by the country’s third president, Mikheil Saakashvili. It was reported by Radio Liberty.
Member of Parliament Levan Khabeishvili, who was in the building with his young son during the incident, told reporters about the pogromists’ attempt to enter the office and subsequent events.
Khabeishvili showed broken windows and stones thrown by attackers at the office. The security of the building offered strong resistance to the attackers. The clash at the office doors lasted about an hour, after which the rioters left in a few dozen vehicles that were left nearby.
Georgia police have launched an investigation into the attack on the party office. The case was initiated under the article on damage or destruction of property.
Levan Khabeishvili claims that the pogrom was organized by the leading Georgian Dream party, and that law enforcement officials, including members of the special forces unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, allegedly participated in it.
The politician is convinced that the attack indicates the fear of the authorities to protest against the so-called “Russian law” – this is how the law “On Transparency of External Influence” is called in Georgia, compared to the Russian law on foreign agent. The United National Movement strongly criticizes the document.
We remind you that the Georgian parliament adopted the law on “foreign agents” in the third reading on May 14, after which the president vetoed it.
Because of this law, protests took place every day in Tbilisi for more than a month and a half. Western states called on Tbilisi to postpone it.
