justice France opened an investigation against a female official in the government of President Emmanuel Macron after two allegations of rape were brought against her, The Paris prosecutor’s office announced this on Wednesday.
The rape allegations date back to when Chrysoula Zaharopoulou — French of Greek origin and current Secretary of State for Development, Francophonie and International Associations — worked as a gynecologist, according to the French magazine Marianne.
According to the prosecutor’s office, one of the complaints was filed on May 25, and the second on June 16.
Who is Chrysoula Zaharopoulou?
ZaharopoulouThe 46-year-old entered government in May, after having been a member of the European Parliament for the previous three years. It depends on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2015 she became known for her endometriosis awareness campaign, she was active in the campaign UN for the distribution of the Covax coronavirus vaccine and spoke out for women’s reproductive rights.
Cases of complaints about violations by public servants
These are not the first rape allegations to cast a shadow over the Macron government and come at a time of political hardship for the president after he failed to maintain a majority in last Sunday’s parliamentary elections.
Minister of Internal Affairs, Gerald Darmaninwas the subject of a rape complaint, initially dismissed, then reopened, and for which prosecutors requested dismissal in early 2022.
Solidarity Minister Damien Abad was also the target of rape allegations in a dispute that erupted last month, but French prosecutors have not launched an investigation.
