The rebels say the attack was a response to “US and UK airstrikes against traffic targets” in Yemen.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for an attack on a US aircraft carrier in the Red Sea. Dwight Eisenhower (USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69)). This was reported on Friday, May 31, by the Houthi-controlled TV channel. Al Masira with reference to a statement by Houthi spokesman Yahya Sari.
“Missile and naval forces conducted a joint operation against the American aircraft carrier Eisenhower in the Red Sea using several cruise and ballistic missiles,” he said, adding that “the strike was precise.”
The attack was a response to airstrikes carried out by the United States and Great Britain on Friday night against traffic targets in Yemen, Sari assured.
“We will without hesitation, directly and immediately respond to any aggression, and will set ourselves the goal of hitting US and British targets,” the Houthi representative assured.
Local media said the United States and Britain conducted a series of airstrikes on Friday, May 31, against Houthi targets in three Yemeni provinces. The strikes killed 16 people and wounded more than 40 others, the Houthis said.
It will be recalled that Yemen’s Houthi rebels have been attacking ships in the Red Sea for several months in a row. So, they are responding to Israel’s military operation in the Gaza Strip. US and allied warships shot down most of the Yemeni missiles and drones.
