The deputy prime minister said Fico underwent two hours-long operations, and a government spokesman said the bullets pierced his small intestine in five places. A few millimeters saved Fico from death. Doctors now assess his condition as “satisfactory.”
The assassination attempt on Robert Fico occurred on May 15 in Gandlova during a meeting with local residents. 71-year-old Juraj Tsintula shot at him almost point-blank. The motive was disagreement with the prime minister’s policies, in particular, the refusal to help Ukraine.
During interrogation, Tsintula said that he would like his country to restore “military assistance to Ukraine,” which he considers the current government to be “a Judas in relation to the European Union,” so he decided to act.
The suspect insisted that he did not want to kill the prime minister, but only intended to wound him so that he could not continue to perform his duties.
According to court materials, the attacker on the Slovak prime minister acted on his own. He began planning the attack on Fico on May 13, using a Czech-made 9-mm CZ 75 pistol, which he owned legally, writes the Slovak publication Pravda.
