French President Emmanuel Macron believes Ukraine should be given permission to attack military bases on Russian territory using Western weapons. He expressed this opinion in a joint briefing with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday, May 28.

“We must allow them to neutralize the military bases where the missiles were launched,” Macron said. He noted that missile attacks on Ukraine are carried out precisely from the territory of Russia.

At the same time, the French leader clarified that Ukraine should not attack civilian buildings or other military installations on Russian territory.

“If you tell them, ‘You are not allowed to reach the point where the missiles were launched,’ you are effectively saying, ‘We will give you weapons, but you are not allowed to defend yourself,'” Macron said.

At the same time, Macron emphasized that France is only helping to defend Ukrainian territory, “staying within the same framework,” and “does not want escalation.”

Scholz, on the other hand, said that Ukraine “has every opportunity under international law to do what it is doing,” and that Western countries that provide arms “have determined all the terms of application based on international that law.”

It was previously reported that Sweden allowed Ukraine to attack the Russian Federation with weapons it supplies.
