The Office of the Prosecutor General is appealing the recent decision of the Shevchenko District Court to close, due to the statute of limitations, criminal proceedings against the leaders of the capital’s special unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs “Berkut” and a Kyiv police official accused of abuse of power with the use of violence and unlawful obstruction of actions on December 13.

The press service of the Office of the Prosecutor General reported this today, May 27.
It is noted that the indictment in this proceeding was sent to court back in 2015.
During the trial, the defense systematically abused procedural rights in order to disrupt court hearings and delay the consideration of the case, notes the Office of the Prosecutor General. “In this regard, prosecutors have repeatedly drawn the court’s attention to the need to comply with reasonable deadlines for judicial proceedings.
Prosecutors are preparing an appeal against the court decision on the grounds of non-compliance with the requirements of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Ukraine when closing criminal proceedings based on the statute of limitations, the department adds.
