Much depends on whether Alliance member nations have warning of a potential attack, Hodges said.
If Russia were to attack one of the NATO member countries, it would take two weeks for its allies to help. Retired American General Ben Hodges said this on Sunday, May 26, in an interview on Romanian television.
“Supposing we don’t start preparing in advance, then Romania and all the other countries – Poland, Lithuania – will have to wait two weeks for additional forces to arrive,” Hodges said.
He emphasized that each NATO country must understand that in the event of an invasion it will find itself face to face with the enemy.
According to Hodges, these two weeks will be used to organize the troops of other countries, as well as all ground forces in the attacked country.
“The air force could come earlier, and the navies of other countries – Turkey and Bulgaria – could also come faster,” Hodges suggested.
He noted that everything also depends on whether the country has a warning of a potential attack, “and whether the political leaders have the courage to act before an attack.”
He added that the Romanian authorities are on the right track in defense matters and understand the real threat of the Russian Federation.
The military man recalled the third article of the NATO charter.
“This speaks to the responsibility of each country to be ready to defend itself and help protect others soon to be replaced by 3%,” he said Hodges.
Let’s remember that Russia unilaterally decided to change the borders with Lithuania and Finland in the Baltic Sea. The project has been postponed, but experts are confident that this is a clear signal to NATO.
