US recommends against traveling to Ecuador due to protests and organized crime

State Department USA issued this Wednesday a warning to all its citizens to avoid travel to Ecuador due to civil unrest as part of the country’s strong protests and organized crime.

On the other hand, the State Department advised its population that ongoing demonstrations in the country “could result in the closure of local roads and major highways, often with no prior notice or estimated reopening time.”

As such, road closures also “could significantly reduce access to public transport and airports and could interrupt travel both within and between cities” in Ecuador.

On Monday night, a protester died after falling from a great height while mobilizing for a national strike, an indefinite strike called by the Confederation of Indigenous Peoples of Ecuador (CONAIE), which is adding its tenth day this Wednesday.

Government refuses to lift state of emergency

Guillermo Lasso’s government has refused to lift the state of emergency, which covers six of the country’s 24 provinces, as a demand by the indigenous movement to end the ten-day-long protests.

“We cannot lift the state of emergency because that would leave the capital defenseless and we already know what happened in October 2019 and we are not going to let that happen,” government minister Francisco Jiménez told Teleamazonas.
