Countries in the Baltic region have agreed to create a “drone wall” to protect their external borders using UAVs. This was announced by Lithuanian Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite on May 24 after a meeting in Latvia with her colleagues from the other two Baltic countries, Poland, Finland and Norway, LRT reports.
“This is a completely new thing – a drone wall that stretches from Norway to Poland – and its purpose is to use drones and other technologies to protect our borders from provocations from unfriendly countries and to prevent smuggling,” Belotite said.
To create such a “drone wall,” countries will reportedly use UAVs to monitor border areas, as well as anti-drone systems to stop drones from hostile countries being used for smuggling and provocations.
Bilotaite said Lithuania has already developed plans to strengthen its border defenses with drones. The Lithuanian State Border Guard recently created a UAV unit and is in the process of acquiring additional drones and counter-drone systems.
Countries will now assess what “homework” they need to do, and then, with the help of experts, national authorities will come up with a plan to implement the “drone wall.”
The ministers also agreed to organize joint evacuation exercises among the participating countries.
“We agreed to conduct regional exercises to ensure the evacuation of the population, to see how our institutions are ready to work, to interact with each other, what are our capabilities for accommodating people, what are the capabilities of other countries, are they ready? they to accept a certain number of our people, “said the minister of internal affairs of Lithuania.
It was previously reported that the air forces of Poland, the United States and the Baltic countries are conducting military exercises.
