.I believe we should allow Ukraine to fight the war as they see fit. They must be able to fight back, as House Speaker Mike Johnson responded to a question about Ukraine’s ability to strike at Russian territory.
Johnson previously blocked a $60 billion aid package to Ukraine for six months.
Johnson said this, in particular, to Ekaterina Lisunova, a Voice of America journalist.
⚡️Asked @SpeakerJohnson about us us weapons on the RU territory?
⁰SPEAKER: I think they need Ukraine to fight for the fight, as they work. They need to be in the fight. And I think I’m trying to micromanage, efficiency may not be a good policy for us. pic.twitter.com/71iLMTa9p8– Kateryna Lisunova (@KaterynaLis) May 22, 2024
When asked by Lisunova whether the United States should lift the ban on the use of its weapons to strike targets in Russia, Johnson said:
I think we should allow Ukraine to wage the war as it sees fit. They (Ukrainians) need to have the ability to strike back. And I think the fact that we are trying to micromanage these efforts is not true for us,” added the speaker of the lower house of Congress.
By the way, a group of congressmen the day before also called on Lloyd Ostier to allow the use of Western weapons to strike Russia.
One of the Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives, Pete Aguilar, answering the same question from Voice of America during a press conference, said that Ukraine has received additional funding to fight for its freedom, but coordination and discussion of the details of the use of US military assistance continues.
Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell previously called for lifting restrictions on the use of American weapons.
