The Times of Israel states, citing an American official, that Jerusalem agrees to reconsider its intentions.
Israel has reviewed its military offensive plans for Rafah to ensure they meet US demands and wishes. The Times of Israel reported this on Wednesday, May 22, citing a comment from a senior White House official.
The official said Jerusalem is “on the right track.”
“It is fair to say that the Israelis have updated their plans. They are taking into account many of the concerns that we have expressed,” he assured.
The official noted that the situation in Rafah has changed significantly in the past few weeks, due to the mass displacement of Palestinians.
The media recalled that for several consecutive months the United States opposed TsAGAL’s large-scale military operation in Rafah, warning that there was no way to carry it out in a way that would save the nearly 1.5 million Palestinian refugees who have taken refuge in the city.
Israel in recent weeks began issuing evacuation orders for large parts of the southernmost city of Gaza, forcing nearly two-thirds of the population to flee to humanitarian zones in the south and west.
The US is still concerned that Israel does not have humanitarian systems capable of caring for the number of people taking refuge in the bombed areas, unlike the relatively more infrastructural Rafah.
Let’s remember that US President Joe Biden said that in the event of a full-scale TsAGAL offensive in the city of Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip, the United States will not provide the Israelis with weapons that can be used in such an operation.
