Soldiers of the “Revenge” brigade hit an aerial target, presumably an Orlan reconnaissance UAV, in the Bakhmut direction. It was shot down by a Stinger man-portable air defense system. The State Border Service of Ukraine reported this on May 21 in Telegram.
As you know, the Stinger MANPADS is a portable surface-to-air anti-aircraft missile system with an infrared homing head. This weapon was developed by specialists from the American company General Dynamics.
This weapon is designed to destroy helicopters and enemy aircraft flying at low altitude on oncoming and catching courses under the influence of natural and artificial thermal interference.
Let us recall that in February, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky instructed the military to “blind” the Russian Orlan and ZALA reconnaissance drones, which the enemy uses for artillery strikes and kamikaze drones.
The Orlan UAV is considered the most common and effective drone in the Russian army because it can adjust artillery fire in real time.
