France supports the International Criminal Court, its independence and the fight against impunity in all situations, mentioned in Paris.
French authorities have expressed support for the International Criminal Court (ICC) after its prosecutor Karim Khan applied for an arrest warrant for senior Israeli officials and leaders of the terrorist group Hamas. This was stated in a statement by the French Foreign Ministry, released the previous day.
The department recalled that France condemned the massacre of Israelis committed by Hamas militants, and also indicated that the decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders will be made by the Pre-Trial Chamber after reviewing the evidence provided by the prosecutor in support of his allegations.
“France supports the International Criminal Court, its independence and the fight against impunity in all situations,” the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry also recalled that for months Paris has been warning about the need for strict adherence to international humanitarian law, especially regarding the unacceptable level of civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip and insufficient access to humanitarian aid.
“France is committed to finding a lasting political solution in the region, the only one that will restore the horizon of peace and end the suffering of both Israelis and Palestinians,” the statement said.
Let’s recall that on May 20, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan asked the Pre-Trial Chamber to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the country’s Defense Minister Yoav Galant , as well as three Hamas leaders on war crimes charges.
In this regard, Netanyahu called Karim Khan’s request to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli leaders “absurd and wrong” and added that it was “new anti-Semitism.”
