Employees of the country’s Security Service have already detained several citizens suspected of activities on behalf of the Russian special services.
The State Security Service of Latvia (VDD) detained two people who were collecting classified information for the Russian intelligence services. This was announced on Thursday, May 16, on the department’s official website.
At the beginning of May, a criminal case was opened against them under Part 1 of Article 85 of the Criminal Code – illegal collection of information, not subject to disclosure, for the purpose of transferring it to a foreign state or foreign organization directly or through the intermediary of another person.
According to the information obtained during the investigation, the individuals illegally collected and transferred information to the Russian intelligence services about other persons suspected of espionage in Latvia, for which a preventive measure was applied in the form of arrest .
One of those detained is Sergei Sidorov, who has been accused of spying for Russia.
On May 15, a preventive measure was applied to the suspects – detention.
