TV8 reports this.
The date of the presidential elections in Moldova was approved by the votes of the faction of the ruling party PAS. They also approved the date of the referendum on the country’s European integration, which will take place on October 20. This was the initiative of the current President of Moldova, Mai Sandu. She proposed holding voting on the same day as the presidential election to save budget funds and increase voter turnout.
Several opposition parties have previously announced their opposition to holding the EU referendum on the same day as the presidential election, saying they would boycott the plebiscite.
For example, the socialist and communist faction opposed holding the referendum on the same day as the presidential election.
With all that said, the Constitutional Court of Moldova last month announced a positive conclusion on the request to hold a referendum on joining the EU. Polls show that public opinion on the need for such a referendum is divided almost in half.
At the end of March, almost 60% of Moldovans surveyed believed that the next president of the country based on the results of the current elections should be the non-incumbent President Maia Sandu. This was evidenced by the results of a survey by the Moldovan IMAS.
Respondents were asked to choose between the option that Sandu deserves a second term as president of Moldova, and the option that “it would be better if someone else took the post of president.”
38% of respondents were in favor of Sandu’s re-election, while 59% would prefer “someone else”, and another 3% were undecided.
