Instead of the question “Are you for Moldova to join the EU?” the ballot will contain the question: “Do you support the introduction of European integration into the Constitution of Moldova?”
The Parliament of Moldova, in a meeting on May 16, approved the date of the referendum on the country’s European integration. It will take place on October 20, 2024. Newsmaker reported it.
The authors of the bill changed the question put to the referendum. Instead of the question “Are you for Moldova to join the EU?” the ballot will contain the question: “Do you support the introduction of European integration into the Constitution of Moldova?” And two possible answers: “Yes” and “No”.
According to one of the authors of the referendum proposal, PAS MP Veronica Rosca, the ballot paper will indicate specific changes to be made to the Constitution if the majority of voters vote in favor of the referendum.
In this case, in the preamble of the Constitution there will be a mention of the European identity and the irreversibility of the European path of Moldova’s development. The Constitution will also have a separate article “European Integration”. This will indicate that Moldova accedes to the treaties establishing the EU and to the laws revising the treaties establishing the EU. Once approved, these treaties and laws will take precedence over national laws.
These amendments will be introduced immediately after the Constitutional Court recognizes the results of the referendum, without further parliamentary voting.
As reported, in February the European Union started the screening procedure for Moldovan legislation, which is mandatory when a candidate country joins the EU.
We remind you that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova has confirmed that the country will cooperate with the EU within the framework of an agreement in the field of security and defense, which the parties will conclude in the near future.
