The Russians claim that the spacecraft is intended for scientific research, but the Americans do not believe this.
A few weeks before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia launched the Cosmos-2553 satellite into space, carrying components of an anti-satellite nuclear weapons system. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal in connection with American officials.
The Kosmos-2553 research vehicle was designed to test components of a potential anti-satellite weapon that could carry a nuclear device.
According to sources, the Russian satellite does not carry nuclear weapons, but it carries non-nuclear components of the new weapons system of the Russian Federation.
These weapons, if deployed, would allow Russia to destroy hundreds of satellites in low-Earth orbit with a nuclear explosion in a space dominated by the US government and SpaceX.
One of the WSJ’s interlocutors called the satellite launched just a “prototype” of a weapon, while others say the Russian program is far from that.
The Cosmos-2553 satellite was launched on February 5, 2022 and is still orbiting Earth in an unusual orbit. Russia says its spacecraft is intended for scientific research, but US officials say such claims are false.
Earlier it became known that Russia, together with China, is planning to put a nuclear power plant on the Moon. They plan to deliver it to the Earth satellite in automatic control mode.
