The tragedy was reported to the State Bureau of Investigation, which began a pre-trial investigation into the death.
The incident occurred on May 14, 2024 at the base of one of the Ukrainian airfields. The training jump was made by a second-year cadet of the Faculty of Training of Specialists of Military Intelligence and Special Operations Forces.
According to preliminary information, the stabilization parachute got caught on the helicopter, was damaged and wrapped around the cadet’s leg, and also prevented the main parachute from opening. The young man began to spin in the air, but the reserve parachute did not have time to fully open.
A 19-year-old boy died at the scene.
The investigation will check whether the cadets were properly trained and instructed during the flights, compliance with the rules during training jumps, and the examination will determine whether the parachute was closed correctly. This was already the young man’s 12th jump during his training period.
