Gitanas Nauseda is “impatiently” awaiting the implementation of the next stages of anti-Russian sanctions.
Lithuanian authorities are ready for Russia to disconnect the country from the regional energy system in response to travel restrictions in the Kaliningrad region. This was stated by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Reuters reported on Wednesday, June 22.
“We are preparing and are now ready for unfriendly actions on the part of Russia in response, such as disconnection from the power grid or otherwise,” Nauseda said.
The Baltic countries – Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia – still rely on power supplies from Russia. Although Lithuania last year was connected to the EU energy system through Poland for insurance.
At the same time, reflecting on the prospects of a possible military clash with Russia, Nauseda called it unlikely: “I do not believe that Russia will challenge us militarily, because we are members of NATO.”
Nauseda added that he plans to raise the issue of transit in the Kaliningrad region at the NATO summit to be held next week in Madrid.
“It would not be a mistake for us to use this example to show what Russia really is and what methods and threats it uses to solve its problems. Maybe it will cool the heads of those who say we should help Russian Federation to save face, while he is threatening us, ”he said.
The President of Lithuania also mentioned that “he expects the implementation of the next stages of sanctions.”
“It would be very good if the European Commission clarified their content with the Russian authorities. It could remove some of the current tension, which is not in the interest of either the European Union or Russia,” Nauseda summed up.
Earlier it was reported that Lithuania intends to block the transit of almost half of the goods by rail to the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation as part of EU sanctions.
The Russian Federation called the blockade of Kaliningrad “a shameless trick of Vilnius.” After that, Lithuania extended restrictions on the transportation of goods in the Kaliningrad region.
