Cotton plants were especially important during the war because the cotton pulp was used to make gunpowder.
Specialists from the Ukrainian Institute for the Examination of Plant Varieties sowed the first fields with five experimental varieties of cotton in the Odessa region. People’s Deputy Dmitry Solomchuk reported this on Telegram on Monday, May 13.
According to him, the cotton varieties were provided by agricultural institutions from Germany, USA and Turkey.
“Now this process is a natural research. If the planting is successful, the first shoots will appear within two weeks. This direction is important for both agriculture and the military industry,” said Solonchuk.
As you know, cotton has a particular value in war conditions, because cotton cellulose is used to make gunpowder. Its demand for Ukraine is estimated at 10,000 tons. To do this, it is necessary to sow 30,000 hectares (or half the amount if cotton is grown on irrigated land).
Let’s recall that on April 23, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a bill on simplifying the circulation of cotton seeds.
