Business Insider writes that the tactic, called “wild weasel,” involves jet pilots allowing enemy air defense radars to show themselves.
After this, the radar waves are tracked to the source, and the established coordinates are struck with AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles.
So that Western missiles could be launched from Soviet fighters in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, they were equipped with special tablets, US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Support William LaPlante previously said.
AGM-88 HARM missiles are capable of hitting targets at a distance of about 150 km, detecting and hitting enemy radars even after the radar systems are turned off.
Ukrainian pilots control Western missile weapons from tablets on modified Soviet fighters, US Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment William LaPlante previously said during a CSIS security forum.
Ukrainians have many Soviet fighters. Together, we were able to integrate Western weapons into them, where they are guided mainly using a tablet,” Laplante said.
The Military portal notes that this information is confirmed by footage of the work of Ukrainian Su-27 fighters during launches of AGM-88 HARM missiles.
It should be noted that the tablet covers a small part of the on-board panel on which the instruments are located. This suggests that in addition to the weapons control system, the software also displays all the necessary parameters of the aircraft in flight, the report says.
