The vote by the 193-member General Assembly is advisory in nature and a global survey of the level of support for Palestine’s bid to become a full member of the UN.
The UN General Assembly strongly supported Palestine’s bid for full membership in the organization and called on the UN Security Council to “reconsider the issue.” Reuters reported this on Friday, May 10.
The resolution was supported by 143 countries, 9 voted against, including Israel and the United States, and 25 abstained. This vote does not grant the Palestinians full UN membership, but only recognizes their right to join. The resolution also advises the UN Security Council to reconsider Palestinian accession.
The vote took place nearly a month after the US vetoed a draft resolution on Palestinian membership in the UN and seven months after the outbreak of war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It also comes amid Israel’s decision to continue building settlements in the West Bank despite UN condemnation.
After the vote, Israeli Permanent Representative Gilad Erdan accused the General Assembly of violating the UN Charter. In his speech, Erdan symbolically cut the organization’s charter into a small shredder.
Today, I showed the General Assembly what they are doing to the UN Charter by ignoring it and tearing it to shreds on stage. I told the ambassadors that this day will be spent in shame and I want the world to remember when they tore up the UN Charter to promote a Nazi regime… pic.twitter.com/NulOtHsAdK

According to the rules, the admission of new member states to the UN is carried out based on a decision of the UN Security Council – a narrow circle of 15 states, some of which are permanent members, and some of which have been saved.
Palestine is an observer state. The General Assembly de facto recognized Palestinian statehood in 2012. The Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-government in the West Bank, is represented at the UN as an observer.
