The Israeli army is ready to launch a military operation in Rafah in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, where terrorists of the radical Hamas movement may still be hiding.
The UK will not stop exporting some weapons to Israel if the IDF continues their full-scale invasion of the Raf. British Foreign Secretary David Cameron announced this on Thursday, May 9, Politico reports.
He said there was a “very fundamental difference” between US and UK arms supplies, with the British government granting individual licenses to companies wishing to export arms abroad.
“The US is a major government arms supplier to Israel. We have no UK government arms supply to Israel. We have a number of licenses and I think our defense exports to Israel are under one percent of the total. That’s a big difference,” Cameron said.
The minister said he would follow “carefully” the UK’s “strict” procedures for arms exports.
As the publication writes, the head of the British Foreign Ministry is facing pressure from some members of parliament, especially from his own party, demanding to suspend arms exports to Israel.
In the past, Cameron has insisted that Britain and its allies are “making little progress” in fulfilling Israel’s promises to increase aid to the Gaza Strip, notably being “very close to having a temporary port and running.”
Earlier, Joe Biden said that in the event of a full-scale offensive by the IDF in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, the United States would not provide weapons to the Israelis that could be used in such an operation.
The Pentagon has confirmed that the US has suspended the supply of ammunition to Israel
