ByteDance says this decision violates freedom of speech and is not commercially, technologically or legally feasible.
Parent company ByteDance, which owns the social network TikTok, has filed a lawsuit in the United States Federal Court of Appeal, seeking to block legislation that would potentially ban TikTok in the States, Reuters reports.
It was noted that the company will challenge the document adopted by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden, which requires it to sell TikTok before January 2025 – otherwise, the social network will be blocked in the United States.
ByteDance claims this decision violates the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech. The lawsuit claims that this is the first time in history that the US Parliament has applied a permanent nationwide ban against a particular platform of opinion and viewpoint.
“Such a move would silence the 170 million Americans who use TikTok’s unique way of communicating,” argued lawyers for the Chinese corporation.
They are also convinced that the sale of the social network is “impossible either commercially, technologically or legally.”
US lawmakers are concerned that China could access or spy on Americans using TikTok. Meanwhile, the social network denies that it has ever transferred user data from the United States.
We remind you that the head of the European Commission is not lifting the ban on TikTok in the EU either. Ursula von der Leyen assured that the EU government “is well aware of how dangerous TikTok is.”
