The cyber attack was carried out on the pay system of active military personnel and some veterans. The hackers were able to take over mainly names and bank details. The attackers also learned the numbers of military bank accounts. London does not officially name the country that committed the hacker attack, but the media blames China. Sky News and BBC write about this.
Conservative MP and former military man Tobias Ellwood said China was “likely to be targeting financially vulnerable people with the intention that they could be coerced in exchange for cash.”
It is noted that we are talking about an external contractor’s system, which is not connected to the main computer systems of the Ministry of Defense; it was turned off after the start of the inspection.
Let us recall that in January 2024, the hacker group Midnight Blizzard, associated with the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation, carried out a cyber attack on the American corporation Microsoft. The attackers gained access to the email accounts of corporate executives, cybersecurity employees, the legal department and a number of other departments.
